A good YouTube description template does three jobs: it puts your main keyword and the payoff in the first line, it lists chapters starting at 0:00, and it keeps links, calls to action and hashtags below the fold. Below are 9 copy-paste templates, one per video type. Pick yours, fill in the brackets, and paste it into YouTube Studio.
Every template follows the same skeleton: keyword-led first line, a short summary, chapters, labeled links, one call to action, and 3 hashtags.

For Shorts the first line of the description matters less than the first second of the video. If you need opening lines, Hook Lab writes hook options for your topic for free.
What actually makes a YouTube description rank
YouTube and Google read your description to confirm what the video is about, and they show its first lines as the preview. Four things matter. Keyword stuffing is not one of them.
Put the keyword in the first line
Only the first 2 to 3 lines show before "Show more", roughly 100 characters on mobile and about 150 on desktop. Put your main keyword in the first 25 words and write that line for a person. "Hey guys, welcome back" wastes it. "Beginner sourdough recipe with the exact timings I use, chapters from 0:00" does not.
Add chapters from 0:00 so the chapter bar appears
YouTube only turns chapters on when there are at least 3 timestamps, the first is 0:00, they are in order, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long. Break any of those rules and YouTube ignores the whole list without telling you. Working chapters give you a segmented progress bar and can show up as key moments in Google.
Write for skimmers and label each block
People skim descriptions on phones. Put each block under a plain label on its own line: summary, Chapters, Links, then one short call to action. Short lines beat one dense paragraph.
Use hashtags and links on purpose
The first 3 hashtags in your description appear above your title. Add more than 15 and YouTube ignores all of them, so 3 to 5 specific ones is plenty. Keep links out of the first two lines so they do not push your keyword out of the preview. Tags carry very little weight now; your title, the first lines of the description and watch time do the work.
How to fill in a template in 3 steps
1. Write line one as a promise with the keyword in it. One sentence that says what the video delivers, using the phrase people actually search. No greeting, link or hashtag in this line. 2. Add real timestamps starting at 0:00. Scrub your finished video, note where each section starts, and type them as MM:SS Label, one per line, at least three, each at least 10 seconds apart. 3. Fill the lower blocks and save in Studio. Add links, one call to action and 3 to 5 hashtags. In YouTube Studio open Content, click the video, paste everything into the Description field, then check that the chapter bar shows on the player.
If you are still at the script stage, YouTube Script Writer drafts the script with sections already laid out, which makes the chapter list easy to write afterwards.
Common mistakes
Spending the first line on "like and subscribe"
That line is the only text most viewers and the search preview ever see. Lead with the keyword and the payoff; move the call to action to the bottom.
Chapters that never turn on
Missing 0:00, only two timestamps, timestamps out of order, or a chapter shorter than 10 seconds all stop the chapter bar from appearing. Check 0:00 first, since that is the most common miss.
Twenty hashtags and none of them working
Past 15 hashtags YouTube drops the whole set. Keep 3 to 5 at the bottom.
One wall of text with links on top
Links and socials in the first two lines push your keyword out of the preview and read badly on mobile. Summary first, labeled blocks below.
FAQ
How long should a YouTube description be? The limit is 5,000 characters. A useful description is usually a few hundred to about a thousand: one summary line, a chapter list, a few links and a short call to action. Length on its own does not rank you.
How much shows before "Show more"? About the first 2 to 3 lines, roughly 100 characters on mobile and around 150 on desktop. Search results show the same text.
Where do timestamps go? In the same Description field in YouTube Studio, one per line as MM:SS Label, starting at 0:00. YouTube builds the chapters from there.
Why are my chapters not showing? Check that the first timestamp is 0:00, you have at least 3, they are in ascending order, and each chapter is at least 10 seconds long.
How many hashtags should I use? 3 to 5. The first 3 appear above your title, and more than 15 makes YouTube ignore all of them.
Should every video use the same description? Use the same structure, not the same words. Keep the skeleton and rewrite the first line, summary and chapters for each video, so YouTube does not see duplicate text across your channel.
