How do you restart a gratitude journal after a break? A low-pressure way back with Thankful
Most gratitude journals do not end with a decision to quit. They end with a busy week, a missed evening, and then a blank page that feels harder to return to than it was to start. We build Thankful, a gratitude journal for iPhone and iPad, and we designed its return path for exactly that moment: three small writing spaces, a daily affirmation on the Home screen, a calendar history of the entries you already have, and a streak that shows the days you returned — not a score you have to protect. This guide is our own first-hand account of how restarting works in the app, what it costs, and what our measured App Store numbers look like so far.
Why is restarting harder than starting?
Starting has novelty on its side. Restarting has a gap to explain, at least to yourself. Two things usually get in the way. The first is size: a full journal page asks for more than an ordinary day seems to offer. The second is the streak. A broken streak can make the practice feel lost, when in fact the entries you already wrote are still there and still yours.
On our Thankful product page we put it this way: the point of the streak is to make space for your life, not to turn a missed day into another thing to feel bad about. That sentence is the design rule behind everything below.
How do you restart in Thankful, step by step?
You do not need a catch-up entry, an apology to your journal, or a summary of the days you missed. Restart with today only.
1. Write one entry, not three. Thankful gives you three spaces, but a restart day only needs one. One specific sentence — something someone said, a small comfort, something you finished — is a complete restart. 2. Read the affirmation, then stop if you need to. The daily affirmation on the Home screen is a pause, not homework. On a restart day, reading it and writing one line is enough. 3. Look at your History before you look at your streak. The calendar in History holds the entries you already wrote, by date. Returning to an older entry you like is often an easier re-entry than staring at the gap. 4. Let the streak restart without commentary. A new streak starting at one day is not a demotion. It is simply the count of a practice you picked back up.
If the same familiar answers keep coming back when you restart, our earlier guide What to write in a gratitude journal when you keep repeating yourself walks through three questions that give a familiar answer a detail from today.
What do our own numbers say about Thankful so far?
We publish our numbers as measured, even when they are small, and we date them. App Store Connect recorded the following for Thankful in the 28 days from 10 October to 6 November 2026: 324 impressions, 30 product page views, and 2 downloads — one from Japan and one from the United States, both through App Store search. In the most recent 7 days of that window, 31 October to 6 November 2026, there were 68 impressions, 7 product page views, and 1 download. RevenueCat, measured on 7 November 2026, shows 12 new customers in its trailing 28 days for the Thankful project and no active paid subscriptions yet.
That is the honest starting point: a real, published app with a small audience. Articles like this one, in the Thankful hub, are part of how we grow it — by answering the exact questions the app is built for, starting with the one people ask after they stop.
Common questions
Do I have to fill all three spaces when I restart?
No. The three spaces are room, not a quota. One specific sentence is a complete entry for a restart day, and you can build back to three when it feels easy again.
What if I broke a long streak?
The entries from that streak are still in your History calendar, and they still count as a record of your days. The streak restarting at one is just a counter starting again; nothing you wrote is lost.
Is Thankful free to download?
Yes. Thankful is free to download, with optional Thankful Pro subscriptions as in-app purchases. The App Store listing we read on 7 November 2026 shows Thankful Pro Monthly at $4.99 and Thankful Pro Annual at $39.99. Check the purchase screen in the app for the current offer before you subscribe.
Which devices does Thankful run on?
Thankful runs on iPhone with iOS 17 or later and iPad with iPadOS 17 or later, as listed on the App Store. The App Store listing also states that the developer does not collect data from the app.
Is a gratitude journal a mental-health treatment?
No. Thankful is a journaling tool, not a substitute for professional care, and you do not need to use gratitude to dismiss a difficult day. Some days the honest entry is a hard one, and that entry belongs in the journal too.
Start again with one moment from today
You do not need to recover the days you missed. Open Thankful, write one thing from today in your own words, and let tomorrow be a separate, smaller decision. Download Thankful on the App Store — it is free, and restarting takes one sentence.
